Moving forward: Using Non-negotiables

We’re three weeks into the year – how is your momentum moving you forward?

After implementing daily non-negotiables (NNs), I significantly changed my activity and productivity.  Non-negotiables are tasks which are performed and completed NO MATTER WHAT.

As a business owners, entrepreneurs and sale professionals, our tasks determine our outcomes.  Our productivity reflects in our profits and paychecks.  Either we do these tasks, pay to have these tasks done, or they sit our the “to-do” list.  There is no “perfect” non-negotiable.  The tasks are simply tasks when done daily move business forward.

For those who are visual – I recorded a few quick video about non-negotiables.  Remember to subscribe to the channel after watching!

Moving Forward in 2021

Since returning to working my business in 2021, I started utilizing 3 daily non-negotiable tasks for my business.  The tasks range from small to large – and must be done before I am done working for the day.

Here are some of the items which have been on my daily lists recently:

  • Write a book chapter
  • Connect with 3 new people and schedule 1 to 1s
  • Attend 3 networking events Thursday
  • Drink 2L of water
  • Meditate for 20 minutes before work

Since starting, I’ve adjusted when they must be accomplished.  I now make sure they are done before picking up my daughter from school – as I’ve learned after she is home my flexibility MUST kick in….  I’ve also adjusted when I set them – I set them the night before for the next day; then review in the morning when I am beginning my day.

Criteria for Non-Negotiables

Non-negotiables are items which are within your direct control.  The tasks have movement – the tasks move business forward, a project forward, complete a task.  The tasks must also be specific.  Generalizations will keep you stuck.

People have asked how many to set for the day.  You want three – yes – just 3.  This allows other work to still be done – and avoid the overwhelm that may come from having everything on your list be a non-negotiable.  More on this in another post.

Here are three non-negotiables for you to do now for a sense of accomplishment immediately:

  • Subscribe to the YouTube Channel for Velocity Business Strategists
  • Share this email with a friend who could use the information
  • Write down 3 non-negotiables for your next work day
(Bonus – then schedule time for your NNs!)
